Used when sowing over large distances, the Broadcast Sowing Machine allowed for the even distribution of seeds and grains and could be adjusted to change the amount sown per acre.

At Brickendon, convicts sowed crops such as wheat, barley, and oats. Sometimes they were also tasked with watching over the sown crops in order to keep birds away, including crows and cockatoos (Diary of William Archer, 22 September and 7 November).
